Chapter 23: Can’t Eat

Gu Qing couldn’t help but also cry when he saw his sister crying. How wronged his sister had been in the Marquis Mansion over the years.

He didn’t know before that in the past few days, a delicate little girl had been slapped, thrown into jail, dragged on the stage, and sold. What kind of punishment was this for a delicate little girl?

Gu Zhang touched Gu Fei’s head, and his eyes were a little moist: “It’s all father’s fault. If I didn’t get sick, you wouldn’t have been sold.”

“From now on, you don’t have to do anything at home, just think of it as my compensating you.”

“Also, from now on, if you want to get married, you can get married. If you don’t want to get married, I will support you for the rest of your life.”

“Waa-” Gu Fei cried even more sadly. Her father was so kind. She wanted to take out the rice, flour, and other delicious food in the space to improve their family’s life, but she couldn’t. She could only eat cornmeal pancakes.

“Waa-”

Poor me, I can only continue to eat cornmeal pancakes.

The father and son were crying happily in the room. Gu Erlang opened the door and came in, startled: “What’s wrong? Does sister’s wound hurt again?”

Gu Fei raised her head and looked at him with tearful eyes, “No!”

“Then why are you crying? Crying makes me feel panicked.” Gu Erlang patted his chest.

Gu Qing wiped away his tears and looked at him sideways: “Why did you come here?”

It was annoying, he ruined the good atmosphere.

Gu Erlang understood the look in his eldest brother’s eyes and felt aggrieved, “The meal is ready, Mom asked me to tell you to eat!”

Gu Fei sniffed and stretched out her hand: “Second brother, help me up.”

Gu Erlang hurried over and helped Gu Fei get off the bed.

The dining table has been set in the main room.

Gu Fei guessed wrong. The staple food was not cornmeal pancakes, but cornmeal batter.

Also, some pickles and boiled wild vegetables are on the table.

Gu Fei sat down with a frown on her face. She wanted to eat rice and braised pork. Waa—

Mrs. Chen felt a little embarrassed when she saw Gu Fei’s face, “Fei’er, these are the only things we have at home. There isn’t even a drop of soup left from the chicken at noon. I will ask your eldest brother to buy some meat tomorrow. When he comes back, I’ll cook it for you alone.”

Mrs. Chen’s words were generous, but her heart seemed to be bleeding.

The family has no money. Not only, they don’t money, but their land has also been mortgaged. How will they live in the future?

Gu Fei quickly smiled and said: “Mom, no need, these are very good. There is a drought this year and many families can’t eat. It’s good that our family can have food.”

Mrs. Chen nodded: “That’s right. If not a drop of rain falls, people will not be able to survive!”

Gu Fei picked up her bowl of cornmeal batter, picked a chopstick, and put it into her mouth, swallowing it with difficulty.

This corn flour was not as finely ground as later generations, and the coarse particles irritate your throat when you swallow it.

Gu Fei’s throat has been raised in the Marquis Mansion.

In the Mansion, even the servants do not eat this kind of food. They only ate white rice and white flour steamed buns, but there were no good dishes.

Gu Fei took a mouthful of cornmeal batter and a piece of pickle. It was a difficult meal.

Gu Zhang looked at his daughter and fell silent.

He was bragging just now that he would raise his daughter all her life, but her daughter obviously can’t eat such coarse food, and he, as a father, can’t do anything about it.

He thought sullenly, he had to go to the city with his daughter tomorrow and find some work no matter what. He will work hard to earn money and support his family first.

After eating for a while, Gu Qing suddenly said: “I went to the city to buy food today, and the price has gone up again.”

The whole family stopped their chopsticks to look at him. Gu Qing sighed: “The price of food has been rising since spring. And now, it has tripled, but I think it will rise even further!”

  1. Considering she lived in apocalyptic times, I’m surprised she’s so picky about food in her current era, especially when she knows the difficulty of her family. Hopefully her attitude will improve to be more understanding and accepting of her current situation.

    Thanks for the chapter! 😀
